Here are some pic's of us enjoying the Ute game . . . even though we were freezing! Whenever we go to a game I have to get bundled up and I also take along 2 or 3 blankets! I don't handle the cold very well.

I am really excited about these pic's because a couple months ago (really probably 6 months ago) I somehow smashed our memory card ... oops, and somehow failed to mention it to Greg. Once he realized what I had done, he purchased another and these are the first pic's taken with it. Kinda depressing that I didn't do something about it sooner because we missed a lot of good photo opportunities, ex: U2 concert in Vegas!

I have decided to add one more thing to my schedule. On Mondays I am teaching a 4th grade class for 45 minutes for Junior Achievement. I didn't know what I was signing up for . . .

Yesterday was my first day, and I didn't know what to expect. When the teacher introduced me to the class as Mrs. Gunn, the kids either giggled, gasped and one student was even brave

enough to speak up and tell me "what an awful name you have!". From that moment I knew I had my hands full.

I had to answer the same question about 30 times, try and speak over them to regain their attention. I had students wanting to blow their nose, go to the nurses office for an itch, and constant pencil sharpening. A student even fell over in her chair breaking the scissor holder and scissor flew all over. Of course all the kids had to jump up and run over and swarm her. I left after 45min's with a headache and a complex about my name.

Overall, it was a fun new experience and I am looking forward to my next visit. I have a new found respect for teachers, they deserve a bigger paycheck!

For all you Billy Madison fans, this is the song that I have been waking up to this week. Greg started law school this week and is really excited. For some odd reason, he really enjoys school and looks forward to each day. I on the other hand, look forward to the day when school will finally be over.

I finished summer semester about a week ago and just started a job with IHC, which I am really excited about. Greg has been doing orientation this week for law school and will officially start school next week. I too will be starting Fall semester next week, finally finishing up my pre-req's for nursing!

Did I mention we are really excited for Utah Football to start . . . GO UTES!

Donut Falls

This weekend my friend Jen and I decided to pull out the hiking shoes. We hiked the trail to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The temperature was perfect, and the scenery was beautiful! It's great to be back in Utah.

PHX to UT

This past weekend Greg and I moved me back to Utah. He will follow shortly with the Uhaul and the rest of our belongings. This is a blog about our fun (long) road trip.

We had plans to stop in Mt. Carmel and spend the night to break the driving time in half. We stopped at our lovely hotel that promised a pool, hot tub, and hi-speed Internet . . . and they delivered none of those things. . .so we packed back up, checked out and continued our drive. We were feeling really good until the last 2 hours of the trip.

This is the sign for the hotel we were suppose to stay the night . . . too bad, we could have tried the "ho-made" pies!

After many days of restless sleep, I have finally decided what color of mixer I am going to get. I want to thank everyone for their input, it really helped my indecisiveness. Kitchenaid should be ashamed of all the colors they offer, making it such a tough decision. I am now a proud owner of the Imperial Grey color Kitchenaid mixer. "A Utah Man Am I"

We have finally made our decision on where Greg will go to law school. It was a really tough decision, but we have decided to move back to Salt Lake City and return to the UofU.

I just finished my CNA course, and I am really excited to start working in a hospital. Next Tuesday I'll take my microbiology final exam and then move back to Utah the following weekend to start summer semester classes. Greg is still working hard and will move to UT about 6 weeks later (he has to make some more dough so we can continue to live so extravagantly -[sarcastic laugh]). We are really excited to be close to family and friends again and look forward to the next couple years.

Mi Casita

Today Susan started her CNA course. The class started yesterday, but the class was full so she was on a wait list and was lucky enough to get in today. When she got to class the instructor told her that she was in the "blue group" and that Luanne would come out next week to take her group to Mi Casita! Susan told me she thought to herself "Mmmmm, that sounds good." But then she found out that Mi Casita is a retirement home.

Frisbee Golf

If you ever get the chance to play frisbee golf, make sure you stretch first. I didn't and now my right arm is hanging lifeless off the side of my body. We had a good time though. Especially observing the other frisbee golfers. There was one person who had one of those rolling cart mechanisms on which you would normally put a full set of clubs if you were walking the course . . . I was laughing so hard because all you have to carry is a single frisbee; unless you're idiots like us and let the frisbee golf salesman talk you into buying a "putter" frisbees for $9 each. "It is critical that you have a putter frisbee." Ya right. In hindsight, it is not critical that you have a putter frisbee, but it is critical that you stretch first.

Today is Greg's birthday, the big 28! When I asked him what kind of cake he wanted me to make for his special day he requested a "Pineapple Upside Down Cake" . . . after such a request I had to confirm with him that he was turning 28, and not 80!

The Lion King

Susan and I went to The Lion King last night. It was pretty sweet. I've now seen The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. Sue has seen all of those except Beauty and the Beast. We both agree that Lion King is the best (athough, I think Beauty and the Beast ties it). If you ever get the chance to go, it's definitely worth the cost of a ticket (in my opinion).

We are so excited for the next season of the AMAZING RACE! So excited that we decided that we should apply to be on the show. . .

Last Wednesday I got online and found the application and saw that the due date was JAN 16th, in 2 days! I panicked and called Greg, told him that we had to have our applications filled out and make a video on why we were perfect for the Amazing Race.

After work I met Greg at Costco to get our passport photos taken, Greg went back to work while I drove around the valley getting a video camera, a VHS player, VHS tapes, a tripod . . . all the necessary items to make this video. Greg didn’t get home from work till 9pm and then the filming began. After numerous takes, we finally finished our video and filled out our applications. We didn’t get to bed till after 1am. The next morning we both woke up early for work and I was getting ready to overnight our audition tape to California. I went online to double check the address and noticed that the application date was JAN 16th 2007!!! I was looking off an old application for a previous season!

We learned that day that our hard work and lack of sleep wasn’t going to get us on the Amazing Race, and Greg learned that day that his wife can't read.

I had a crazy idea yesterday . . . CARVING PUMPKINS! (which Greg wasn't too thrilled about)

I haven't carved a pumpkin since I was probably in 3rd grade, and last night I realized why. I had forgotten how much it sucked. We decided to be creative and not do the typical Jack-O-Lantern face. . .It took way too long!

Last weekend Greg and I went to Tucson to watch the USC vs UofA game. We tailgated before the game with Greg's friend Joanna, who he met at USC, and her mom and sister. We watched the team arrive at the stadium, and Pete Carroll gave me a high five . . . it was funny. The game was good, it was close, and we were surrounded by swarms of UofA fans.

We decided to take the kids on a trip to the zoo to see all the animals. The last time Greg and I went to the zoo was in LA, and all the cages were empty . . . so we were hoping this experience would erase our negative memory. . . AND IT DID!

Squaw Peak

Labor Day morning I went hiking at Squaw Peak with my friend Sarah from work. It was really hot, but felt good to get outside for some fresh air. I've been cooped up in airconditioned buildings/cars all summer. While hiking we came across a group of guys who were on mountain bike unicycles! Unbelievable. It was pretty amazing to watch them climb hills, and go down hills on one tire.

health exam

As part of my health insurance I can get an "executive" health exam each year. I can't get an "executive" salary, but I guess a health exam is the next best thing. So I went this morning. It was a pretty comprehensive exam and included an EKG, eye test, hearing test, blood test, etc. I'll let you know if I have any diseases when I get the results back.

One part of the exam involved examining my lung capacity, or something to do with my lungs. The instructions were to take my biggest inward breath then blow the air out as hard and fast as I could into a large tube. So I wanted to perform at my best and was hoping to set a record of some sort. So I got 3 tries and on my 2nd try I was blowing so hard that I caused a severe muscle strain in my neck. It kills! Ironically, I was injured during my health exam. Then the nurse got the report and said my relative age, based on my lung test, was 60. What a joke!

Grand Canyon

We went to the Grand Canyon this weekend. Very cool.

The elevation at the south rim of the Canyon is about 7000 feet, comparable to Park City and an increase in elevation from Phoenix of nearly 6000 feet. It was really nice to get out of the hot desert lowlands and up into the higher and cooler climate.

The highlight of the trip was watching a storm roll in across the canyon. It was quite spectacular.

It was also cool to see how many people from across the world were there. We met people from Brazil, Japan, and London.

A quick update:

Sue and I have, once again, spent the better part of the weekend sitting in the living room with Sue studying for a test on Monday and me doing LSAT practice questions.

I was excited to watch the delayed broadcast (due to time difference) of the British Open while we both studied. About 5 seconds after I had turned it on a scrolling newsflash went across the bottom of the screen announcing that Harrington had won the British Open. So I shut it off and I suspect somebody over at ABC lost their job.

We're working on purchasing tickets to Utah for Thanksgiving. We're looking into flying in a bit early to catch the Utes beating of BYU on the 22nd.

That's pretty much all I can think of to write at the moment.

Embarrassingly, I realized today that I wasn't completely sure why we celebrate July 4th. I thought it had something to do with the Constitution or something related, but wasn't sure. So I did a bit of research and found the following: On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Consitution wasn't adopted until 11 years later in September of 1787. Who knew?!! I guess it makes sense to have a Constitution only after declaring independence.

The Declaration of Indepence begins:

"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

I also did some reading on the Star Spangled Banner. I found the following, which made watching the fireworks tonight more meaningful than it was in the past for me:

Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner. He was an American prisoner-exchange agent. Key was near Baltimore on a British naval ship off the coast negotiating the release of an American hostage on September 3, 1813. During the negotiation he became aware of a planned attack by the British on Baltimore that night. The British held him on board a peripheral naval ship during that night, as to keep him from going back to the American troops to forewarn them of the planned attack. As he sat watching the bombardment, the explosions lit up the night sky and allowed him to see the American base and the American flag hoisted above it, which signified that the Americans were still in control of the base. During the night the bombardment stopped and Key was unable to tell if the American flag had been replaced by the British flag, but the dawn light revealed the American flag still remained.

The fireworks symbolize the "the bombs bursting in air" that Key's watched that night, during which time he was able to see "that our flag was still there", giving him assurance that the Americans were still holding strong against the attack.

I was recently informed that my name is on a plaque by the bathroom at the local Dairy Keen in Heber. The local community refers to it as, "The Train". Yes, a plaque, by the restroom, to honor all current and past employees. While I worked the deep fryer, I held my head, which supported a train conductor hat, up high. I wish I had a picture to post of me in that lovely hat during my 3 month career. If anyone happens to be at The Train in the near future, please take notice of the plaque, with my name on it, next to the bathrooms.

Politics

The general election is just over four months away. It's time to decide who to vote for. But what should be my basis for making the decision?

For example, should I vote for the person that I feel most closely shares my own political opinions? If so, then that would mean that I am actually the best candidate for President - soda in all the drinking fountains!

Should my vote go to the candidate who has the most experience? . . . experience doing what?

Should my vote go to the candidate that would offer the most balance to the 3-branch system? If so, who would that even be (as it stands now the Congress leans "liberal" and the Supreme Court leans "conservative")?

Trying to sort this all out is quite a task. So I decided to check out both party's platforms,which are viewable online at each party's official website. The Democratic Party's platform is 43 pages long and the Republican Party's platform is 92 pages long. So I guess the Republican's have twice as many good ideas - now I'm getting somewhere! Wait, correction: I just discovered that by removing the references to 9/11 from the Republican's platform, it is now only about 3 pages long. And by removing the references to President Bush's failures from the Democrat's platform it is also only about 3 pages long.

Here is the direction I'd like to see the U.S./world move in:

end the Iraq War (but have Iraq thrive as a peaceful country without us there)
no more terrorist attacks globally
lower health care costs (but higher quality health care, of course)
Jazz win NBA championship
higher standard of living for all nations

Not in that order.

Both Party's platforms are so rhetorical, vague, and boring I couldn't really make any sense of them. I even tried to pick a specific issue, for example, health care, to try to compare the platforms against each other. Here's what I got:

Republicans Platform:

"We must attack the root causes of high health care costs by: aiding small businesses in offering health care to their employees; empowering the self-employed through access to affordable coverage; putting patients and doctors in charge of medical decisions; reducing junk lawsuits and limiting punitive damage awards that raise the cost of health care; and seizing the cost-saving and quality-enhancing potential of emerging health technologies. It is also important that we reaffirm our Party’s firm rejection of any measure aimed at making health care a government-run enterprise."

Democrats Platform:

"We believe not just that a strong America begins at home, but that a strong America begins in the home. And just as government's first responsibility is the health and safety of its people, parents' first responsibility is the health and safety of their children. We believe that health care is a right and not a privilege. At the center of our efforts will be a plan to reduce health costs. We will lift a financial burden on families, businesses, and the self-employed by picking up the tab for the highest-cost medical cases."

I find myself thinking "good point" while reading both of them.

At my core, I want a President to be a fiscal conservative but a social liberal. Let people live how they want, help (don't bail out) the poor with health care needs and education, move aggressively towards energy autonomy, but don't raise taxes to make that all happen - just stop spending money on inneficient or unnecessary programs.

So, who knows who I'll end up voting for . . . I may just write-in myself. Whoever wins, it will be a change and I'm looking forward to it.

Swimming

Sue and I decided to start swimming for exercise. We like to run, but the heat is making it miserable. We equipped ourselves with the goggles and tight fitting swimwear. For lessons we watched youtube videos, lol (see link below). We have been a few times and have really enjoyed it. We have a lot of work to do on our mechanics, but we're getting better. . . correct mechanics or not, it's a great workout.

Sailing

Sue told me this would be a boring post and that I had to write the following: "Warning: May Cause Drowsiness."

To which my response is: "Warning, May Cause Happiness due to a Heightened Appreciation for Life."

And now for my post.

There is something about sailing on the ocean that appeals to me. I've always wanted to try it and learn about it. It requires an understanding of weather, physics, navigation, currents, astronomy, and a slew of other things. And it all happens on top of the beautiful ocean. What greater adventure could there be than sailing to some distant destination, the coast slowly moving past you, relying on your skills to keep on course, and all the while being keenly aware that you are just a speck on a massive ocean and at the mercy of the wind? In my opinion, that would be hard to beat.

So I've never sailed but think I love it. In any case, I came across the book "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Joshua Slocum.

During a 3 year period ending in 1898 Slocum became the first person to sail alone around the world and his book details his trip. He even built his own ship, the Spray, a 36-foot sloop. Can you imagine building your own sailboat and then sailing it around the world?!

He set sail from Fairhaven, Massachusetts on April 24, 1895 and wrote this:

"I had resolved on a voyage around the world, and as the wind on the morning of April 24, 1895 was fair, at noon I weighed anchor, set sail, and filled away from Boston, where the Spray had been moored snugly all winter. The twelve o'clock whistles were blowing just as the sloop shot ahead under full sail. A short board was made up the harbor on the port tack, then coming about she stood to seaward, with her boom well off to port, and swung past the ferries with lively heels. A photographer on the outer pier of East Boston got a picture of her as she swept by, her flag at the peak throwing her folds clear. A thrilling pulse beat high in me. My step was light on deck in the crisp air. I felt there could be no turning back, and that I was engaging in an adventure the meaning of which I thoroughly understood."

His route was interesting. He left Fairhaven and stopped briefly in Nova Scotia (where he was born) then continued on to the Strait of Gibraltar near Spain. At a port there a sailor told him to avoid the western coast of Africa, which was infested with pirates. Slocum took his advice and headed southwest back across the Atlantic, but was chased by pirates nonetheless. Luckily for him the Spray was able to outrun the pirate’s larger, slower boat.

He wrote often about the sea life that accompanied him, mainly dolphins and porpoises. Flying fish would sometimes land on his deck.

He reached the coast of northern Brazil and followed the coast south until he was able to round Cape Horn via the Strait of Magellan. From there he headed east across the massive Pacific. Off the coast of Chile he stopped by the Juan Fernandez Islands, the islands on which Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) lived. He visited Samoa and then Sydney. From Sydney he sailed north across the Great Barrier Reef and then headed east again along the northern coast of Australia. At last he made it to Cape Town, South Africa and rounded the “other great Cape”, which left him with one final (his third) crossing of the Atlantic, to Central America and then north through the Caribbean islands and finally back to Massachusetts!

Slocum navigated the entire trip using lunar navigation combined with a method of "dead reckoning" which uses a clock and some calculations. Unbelievable.

That was a bit wordy, but I really got a kick out of his book and wanted to write about it.

In any case, hopefully someday I'll get to learn to sail and take a long trip. You're all invited. We'll learn to navigate the currents and manage the sails. If we're lucky, we'll get lost and end up on the Juan Fernandez Islands.

Suz's First Day

Today Suz had her first day at work and school. She got a job working part-time as a marketing assistant for a civil engineering firm. She also started school again. She said her body is in shock because it's used to lying by the pool or watching Soap Operas all day. Now it has to work and go to school. But she is excited.

Memorial Day Weekend

We decided to pack up and head back to Utah for the Memorial Day weekend. We had a great time visiting family and cruising around in our rental. We reserved an ecomony class . . I think it was a clown car or something about that small, but all they had left when we got in at midnight was a Wrangler. The weather didn't cooperate with us so the top stayed on most of the trip.
